About the Tour
We will trace the history of modern art by stopping at three outstanding museums in Madrid, as we talk about the birth of modern art (impressionism) and its full growth and development (expressionism, cubism, surrealism), and as we walk down Paseo de Recoletos in what is known as the Golden Mile of Art. We’ll visit the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Caixa Forum and The Reina Sofia Museum.
The German Baron Von Thyssen brought to Madrid his outstanding collection of modern art to Madrid last century . We will discuss paintings by Renoir, Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Kitchener and talk about modern art in its early years.
Our second stop will be at Caixa Forum, which now houses a collection of Toulouse Lautrec´s paintings and posters. The full splendor of what the French call “ belle époque” comes to life in Lautrec´s art when Paris reached its maximum splendor bringing art and night-life to its zenith.
The Reina Sofia Museum
Two Spanish artists brought modern art to one of its most tantalizing moments. Working with other French artists, Pablo Picasso brought about a revolution in modern painting by displaying reality in terms of geometric patterns and flat surfaces coming to its full effect in his outstanding “Guernica”, in display at the Museum. Dalí was equally revolutionary by painting not what his eyes saw but what his mind dreamt.
